Keough files bill to end in-state tuition for illegals

Representative-Elect Mark Keough Files Legislation to End In-State Tuition for Non-Legal Residents.

The Woodlands TX, — Earlier today my office pre-filed a bill that if passed would end the in-state tuition breaks given to non-legal residents who attend institutions of higher education. This tuition break subsidized by the Texas taxpayer has caused unnecessary strain on our state’s budget. HB 360 would require students applying for resident in-state tuition to provide proof of citizenship that is verifiable through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program. The SAVE Program is a service that helps federal, state and local benefit-issuing agencies, organizations, and licensing agencies determine the immigration status of benefits applicants so only those entitled to benefits receive them.

Cost to Texas citizens for providing in-state tuition breaks to non-legal residents have soared to over twenty million dollars per year in the recent years. This figure doesn’t include state grants and other programs undocumented students receive. HB 360 is a step in the right direction ensuring only Texas legal residents receive tuition breaks.
